| Tour Jean sans Peur is the last remnant of Hôtel de Bourgogne |
Location: 20 Rue Étienne Marcel
English translation:
Built in 1270 for Robert d’Artois, nephew of Saint Louis (King Louis IX), this mansion stands against the city walls constructed by Philippe Auguste. In 1318, it passed by marriage to the Dukes of Burgundy and became their principal residence in 1402. After the assassination of his cousin Louis of Orléans, the king’s brother, Duke Jean sans Peur (John the Fearless) had the tower that now bears his name (Tour Jean-sans-Peur) built in 1408 at the centre of the residence; it still remains visible today. In 1543, the estate was divided, and a new street, named Rue Française in honour of François I, was cut through it. On the land to the west of this street, the Confrères de la Passion (Brothers of the Passion) built a performance hall, inaugurated on 30 August 1548. In 1629, it became the theatre of the Hôtel de Bourgogne, whose troupe rivalled that of Molière.
